The third time's a charm! We finally were able to see the Glockenspiel spring to life with music, dancing dolls and jausting knights at Marienplatz. After watching the clock tower's show, we got ice cream at Schuhbeck's Eis. Larissa was in love with the Cookies flavor, a rich toffee gelato complete with soft, buttery cookies. We also tried Argan gelato, which the server said was made with oil from argan seeds grown exclusively in Morocco. (It tasted a lot like sesame).
In a subsequent cab ride, Larissa and the driver got into a discussion about Alfons Schuhbeck, the Michelin-star chef who owns the ice cream salons and beautiful Orlando restaurant that the Brit-Tans visited. The driver said that while Schuhbeck was an extremely talented and famous German celebrity chef, he was also a poor money manager. While he was at the top of his game, Schuhbeck apparently had lost his entire fortune and was sleeping on friends' couches. Although the Brit-Tans remain unable to verify this story in any way, such tales provided a colorful backdrop to our culinary experiences in Munich.
We then drove to Garmisch while munching on fresh sandwiches, pretzels and pastries from Rischart, a bakery in Marienplatz close to the Glockenspiel.
